Why Choose Automatic Driving Lessons?
Over half of new cars sold in the UK are now automatic. Here's why more learners are choosing automatic lessons in East London.
No Clutch Control
The hardest part of learning to drive, gone. No stalling, no hill starts to worry about, no biting point.
Learn Faster
Without the distraction of gear changes, you can focus entirely on the road, other traffic, and your positioning.
Less Stressful
Automatic cars are simpler to operate. Most learners feel more relaxed and confident from the very first lesson.
Ideal for City Driving
London traffic means constant stopping and starting. Automatic makes this effortless, no clutch fatigue.
Great for Nervous Learners
If the thought of coordinating clutch, gear, and steering feels overwhelming, automatic removes that barrier.

Is Automatic Right for You?
Automatic is not for everyone, and that is okay. Here is how to know if it suits your situation.
Choose Automatic If...
- You feel anxious about coordinating clutch, gears, and steering all at once (see our nervous driver courses)
- You have been struggling with clutch control in manual lessons
- You only plan to drive automatic or electric cars (most new cars are automatic)
- You want to pass faster and potentially save money on lessons
- Busy London traffic makes you nervous, automatic removes clutch fatigue
- You have a physical condition that makes clutch use difficult
- You just want to get your licence and move on with life
Consider Manual If...
- !You might need to drive manual company vehicles for work
- !You want maximum flexibility to drive any car in the future
- !You enjoy the control and engagement of manual driving
- !You plan to drive older or classic cars
- !You are already comfortable with clutch control
- !You want to drive manual cars abroad where automatic is less common
Who Chooses Automatic Driving Lessons?
More people than you might think. Here are some of the learners who have made the switch.
The Nervous Learner
Sarah was overwhelmed trying to coordinate everything in manual. Automatic let her focus on the road. Passed in just 6 weeks.
The Career Changer
James needed his licence for a new job. Automatic meant fewer lessons needed, so he was on the road faster and within budget.
The Busy Parent
Priya had limited time between school runs. Automatic meant more progress per lesson. Less mental load, faster results.
The Electric Convert
David knew his next car would be electric (all automatics). Why learn a skill he would never use? Smart thinking.
Common Myths About Automatic Driving
Do not let these misconceptions hold you back from choosing what works best for you.
“Automatic is cheating”
The driving test is exactly the same. Same routes, same manoeuvres, same pass mark. You are not tested on your ability to use a clutch, you are tested on your ability to drive safely.
“You will be limited to what cars you can drive”
True, but consider this: over 50% of new cars sold in the UK are automatic. All electric cars are automatic. The trend is only going one way. Many automatic drivers never feel limited.
“It is more expensive”
Automatic lessons cost the same per hour. But you typically need 10-15 fewer hours to reach test standard. Do the maths, automatic often works out cheaper overall.
“Real drivers use manual”
This is just snobbery. The goal is to drive safely and pass your test. How you achieve that is entirely up to you. Choose what works for your life.
What to Expect in Your First Automatic Lesson
Never driven automatic before? Here is exactly what will happen.
Meet your instructor
They will explain the car controls. Automatic has just two pedals (brake and accelerator) and a simple gear selector (P, R, N, D).
Learn the controls
Your instructor will show you how to start the car, select Drive, and use the footbrake. It takes about 5 minutes to understand.
Moving off
This is where it gets good. Foot on brake, select D, release brake, gentle accelerator. The car moves. No stalling, no biting point. Just smooth movement.
Driving on quiet roads
You will be driving on real roads within minutes. Without clutch worries, you can focus on steering, observations, and road positioning from the start.
Building confidence
Most learners are amazed at how much progress they make in the first lesson. That feeling of "I can actually do this" comes much faster in automatic.
Already Started in Manual? Switching is Easy
Many of our automatic students started in manual and switched. If that is you, here is the good news:
“I wish I had switched sooner. I wasted 6 months battling the clutch when I could have been learning to actually drive.” - Common feedback from switchers
