Feeling nervous? That's completely normal. Here's exactly what happens in your first lesson, what to bring, and what you'll learn. No surprises, no pressure.
Make sure you have these ready before your instructor arrives
Provisional Driving Licence
You must have a valid UK provisional licence. We cannot start a lesson without it.
Comfortable Shoes
Flat shoes you can feel the pedals through. Avoid heels, flip-flops, or thick-soled boots.
Glasses or Contact Lenses
If you need them for driving, bring them. You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres.
Water
Concentration is hard work. Having water to hand keeps you sharp.
A typical first lesson is 2 hours. Here's how it usually goes.
They'll come to your door at the agreed time. You'll have a quick chat about what you want to get out of the lesson. No rush.
Before anything else, you'll learn the cockpit drill. seat, mirrors, steering wheel. Your instructor will explain every control and what it does. No jargon.
We find a quiet residential street with very little traffic. You'll practise moving off, stopping, and basic steering. Your instructor has dual controls so they can help if needed.
As you get more confident, you might try turning at a junction or driving a slightly busier road. But only when you're ready. your instructor will never push you before it's time.
At the end, your instructor will recap what you covered, what went well, and what you'll work on next time. You'll book your next lesson if you're ready.
You won't master everything on day one. but you'll cover more than you expect
How to set up the car: seat position, mirrors, steering wheel, headrest, and seatbelt. Getting this right makes everything easier.
Clutch, brake, accelerator, gears, handbrake, indicators, and lights. We'll explain each one before you use it.
You'll learn to pull away smoothly and stop safely. We start on a quiet road so there's no pressure.
How to hold the wheel, how to steer around corners, and how to straighten up. It feels natural faster than you'd think.
Where to look, when to check mirrors, and how to build awareness of what's happening around you.
Every single one of our students has had at least one of these worries. Here's the truth.
“I was so nervous I nearly cancelled. But my instructor was calm, patient, and actually made it fun. By the end of the first lesson I was driving down a real road. I couldn't believe it. Best decision I ever made.”
