Much of the estate is private road, the main routes run through tunnels and underpasses, and the roads that feed it, like Aspen Way and Westferry Road, are busy at the start and end of the working day. It is also where a lot of learners work, which brings the bigger challenge: finding time. Lessons can start before work or in the evening, with pick up from home or near the office, and weekend slots suit people who would rather do longer sessions. Early lessons use quieter streets on the Isle of Dogs before moving onto Westferry Road, Manchester Road and Aspen Way. Manual and automatic are both available.

Route Tips from Canary Wharf
- Every route leaves by Kildowan Road, a 20mph side street, and most turn onto Granton Road or Goodmayes Road straight away. Check both ways properly at that first junction; nerves make it the easiest place to rush.
- Green Lane (the A1083) appears on almost every route. It is a long 30mph road with side roads, crossings and parked cars, so hold a steady 30 and watch for vehicles pulling out.
- Many routes head south into Becontree: Goodmayes Lane, Mayesbrook Road, Becontree Avenue and Wood Lane. Becontree Avenue is 20mph and has a central reservation on parts of it, so check which side of the island you need before you turn.

Moved to Canary Wharf with a licence from abroad
Many people at the Wharf arrived from another country with a licence already in their pocket. Some licences can be exchanged for a UK one without a test, as long as you do it within five years of becoming resident. Others mean passing the UK theory and practical tests.

Yes. Pick up covers the whole of E14, including the Isle of Dogs, Limehouse and Poplar.
Can I take my test south of the river?+
You can, but we keep Canary Wharf learners on this side of the Thames and book Goodmayes. The quickest way to a centre on the other side is usually the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel, and both charge a TfL toll each way: £1.55 off peak or £4.20 at peak times with Auto Pay, and the peak rate at any time without it (TfL prices from September 2026). The Woolwich Ferry is free but slow and can have long queues. Staying on this side avoids that cost and the risk of being held up on the way to your test.
