Insider Tips for Goodmayes

1

Goodmayes Road and the High Road A118 get very busy. Practice strict lane discipline and bus lane awareness, bus lane violations are the most common instant fail at Goodmayes.

2

The Barley Lane Roundabout is the trickiest spot on most routes. Multi-lane signal-controlled junction with fast-paced traffic. Plan your lane early and commit.

3

Seven Kings junction demands strong anticipation, the entry can build up quickly during off-peak so do not be surprised by stationary cars.

4

Residential roads around Becontree Avenue, Goodmayes Lane and Green Lane are where manoeuvres usually happen. Both bay parking and parallel parking are commonly tested.

5

A12 Eastern Avenue and the A406 North Circular slip roads need confident dual carriageway joining and a fast safe merge.

6

20mph zones around Goodmayes Road shops and Seven Kings Road shopping parade are strictly enforced, watch the speedo.

7

School zones along Goodmayes Lane and Loxford Lane have variable timed restrictions, look for the flashing signs before assuming a speed limit.

What Goodmayes Test Routes Look Like

Goodmayes test routes are a mix of urban high-street driving, busy multi-lane roundabouts, and short stretches of dual carriageway. Most routes leave the centre via Goodmayes Road or the High Road, work through the residential streets of Seven Kings or Becontree for one or two manoeuvres, and feature at least one approach to either the Barley Lane Roundabout or the A12 Eastern Avenue. Independent driving sections often follow signs back to Goodmayes via Romford Road or Longbridge Road. DriveThruL instructors have driven every Goodmayes test route hundreds of times. We know which traffic lights split lanes, which bus lanes operate at which times, and exactly where the examiner is most likely to ask for a manoeuvre.

Common Goodmayes Test Routes

The most frequently used route patterns at Goodmayes Driving Test Centre, drawn from instructor experience and student debriefs.

1. The Becontree Loop

Exits the centre onto Goodmayes Road, joins the High Road A118 east, takes a left through Seven Kings and into the residential grid around Becontree Avenue for the manoeuvre, returning via Green Lane and the Barley Lane Roundabout.

Key roads
  • Goodmayes Road
  • High Road A118
  • Seven Kings Road
  • Becontree Avenue
  • Green Lane
  • Barley Lane
Watch out for
  • Goodmayes Road bus lane discipline
  • Lane choice at Barley Lane Roundabout (signal-controlled, multi-lane)
  • Becontree Avenue parked-car gauntlet

2. The Eastern Avenue Run

Heads north from the centre to join the A12 Eastern Avenue slip road, dual carriageway driving for two junctions, exits and returns via Longbridge Road into the Goodmayes Lane manoeuvre zone, then back along Goodmayes Road.

Key roads
  • Goodmayes Lane
  • A12 Eastern Avenue
  • Longbridge Road
  • Goodmayes Road
Watch out for
  • Joining A12 at speed, confident merge needed
  • Lane discipline on the slip road back off
  • Speed-limit transition from 50mph dual carriageway back into 30mph residential

3. The Seven Kings Independent

Used for the 20-minute independent driving section. Follows signs from Seven Kings junction through Cameron Road, Aldborough Road North, eventually rejoining Eastern Avenue and returning via the High Road. Tests sign-reading, anticipation, and confident lane changes.

Key roads
  • Seven Kings Road
  • Cameron Road
  • Aldborough Road North
  • A12 Eastern Avenue
  • High Road A118
Watch out for
  • Following signs while still observing mirrors and signalling
  • Multi-lane decisions at Seven Kings junction
  • Pedestrian crossings near Aldborough Road shops

4. The Loxford Lane Manoeuvre Route

Quieter residential route used when the examiner wants a tight bay-park or parallel-park manoeuvre. Goes via Loxford Lane, Loxford Park, returns via Ilford High Road. Often used for nervous learners or first-test candidates.

Key roads
  • Loxford Lane
  • Loxford Park
  • Ilford High Road
  • Goodmayes Road
Watch out for
  • School-zone variable speed limits on Loxford Lane
  • Reverse bay park in the Loxford Park area
  • Pulling up on the right on a residential street

5. The A406 Approach

Less common but does appear. Heads south to the A406 North Circular via Barking Road, drives a short stretch of the North Circular, exits and loops back through Becontree. Reserved for confident learners and high-traffic windows.

Key roads
  • Barking Road
  • A406 North Circular
  • Becontree Avenue
  • Goodmayes Road
Watch out for
  • High-speed dual carriageway merge
  • Heavy traffic in commuter windows
  • Multi-lane exit decisions on the A406

Common Faults at Goodmayes

The mistakes we see most often on Goodmayes routes, with the fix.

Barley Lane Roundabout
Wrong lane on approach or hesitation in the middle
Read the overhead signs early, commit to the lane before the give-way line. Hesitation here is one of the most common serious faults at Goodmayes.
Goodmayes Road bus lanes
Driving in the bus lane during operating hours
Goodmayes Road bus lanes operate weekday peaks. Bus lane violations are an instant fail. Always check the timed-restriction sign at the start of any bus lane stretch.
Seven Kings junction
Late observation when changing lanes mid-junction
Lane changes inside the junction need a fresh mirror check before each move. Examiners specifically watch for this here.
A12 Eastern Avenue slip road
Joining too slowly and forcing other traffic to brake
Build to 50mph on the slip road, match the flow before merging. Hesitation forces other traffic to react and is marked as serious.
20mph zones around the shops
Drifting over 20mph downhill or after a junction
The 20mph limit applies across the whole Goodmayes Road and Seven Kings Road shopping parade. Check the speedo through every junction in those zones.
Loxford Lane school zone
Missing the variable speed-limit sign and driving at 30mph through 20mph timed restriction
Loxford Lane has school-zone flashing signs. When they flash, the limit is 20mph. Watch for them on every approach.
Residential manoeuvre on Becontree Avenue
Mounting the kerb during the reverse
Becontree Avenue is narrower than it looks because of permit-parked cars. Use very small steering inputs and full observation. Take all the time you need.
