The average wait for a driving test in London is 19 to 24 weeks. But you do not have to wait that long. Thousands of test slots are cancelled every week, and with the right approach, you can grab one.

Understanding the problem helps you solve it
Post-pandemic demand for driving tests remains at an all-time high. The DVSA is processing more tests than ever, but supply has not caught up.
East London has a handful of test centres serving millions of people. Slots fill up within minutes of being released.
Summer months and school holidays see a surge in bookings. January and September are also peak times as new learners start.
Some booking services snap up slots in bulk, making it even harder for individual learners to find dates.
From free methods to paid services, here are your options
Log into your DVSA account early morning (6 to 7am) and check for cancellations manually. This is free but time-consuming. Best days to check are Monday and Tuesday.
Services like Driving Test Cancellations Now, Testi, and DTC4You automatically scan for cancelled slots. Most charge 15 to 30 pounds and can save you months of waiting.
Some premium services can automatically book a cancellation for you the moment it appears. This is the fastest method but typically costs 30 to 50 pounds.
Do not limit yourself to one centre. Add 3 or 4 nearby centres to increase your chances. Consider Goodmayes, Hornchurch, Barking, and even centres slightly further out.
The more flexible you are with dates and times, the better your chances. Early morning and late afternoon slots are often the first to become available as cancellations.

Only book an earlier test if you are genuinely ready. Taking a test before you are prepared wastes money (£62 test fee) and can damage your confidence.
Your instructor is the best judge of when you are test-ready. Trust their assessment.
Avoid unofficial or unverified cancellation services. Only use well-known providers.
“I was quoted a 22-week wait at Goodmayes. Used a cancellation service and got a slot in 3 weeks. Passed first time. Best £20 I ever spent.”

“My instructor suggested trying Hainault instead of Goodmayes. Shorter wait and I found the routes much more manageable. Sometimes the less obvious choice is the best one.”

“I checked the DVSA site every morning at 6am for two weeks and found a cancellation at Hornchurch. It takes patience but it works if you are persistent.”
