So Which Should You Choose?

Choose Automatic If...

  • You want to pass faster and potentially save money
  • Clutch control is stressing you out
  • You plan to drive electric or automatic cars
  • You are a nervous or anxious learner
  • City driving in London is your main use
  • You want to focus on the road, not the gears

Choose Manual If...

  • You might need to drive manual work vehicles
  • You want maximum flexibility to drive any car
  • You enjoy the control of manual driving
  • You plan to drive abroad where manual is common
  • You want one licence that covers everything
  • You are already comfortable with clutch control

The UK Is Going Automatic

The numbers tell a clear story

26%

Of driving tests taken in automatic cars in 2015

40%+

Of driving tests taken in automatic cars by 2025

2035

UK ban on new petrol and diesel car sales

In 2015, just 26% of driving tests were taken in automatic cars. By 2025, that figure has risen to over 40%.

Over 54% of new cars sold in the UK are now automatic. All electric vehicles are automatic. With the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel sales, this trend will only accelerate.

The stigma around automatic licences is disappearing. Choosing automatic is increasingly seen as the practical, smart choice.

What Our Learners Chose

“I switched from manual to automatic after 20 hours of battling the clutch. Best decision I ever made. Passed in another 15 hours. Wish I had started with automatic.”

Daniel K.

Ilford, IG1

“I chose manual because I wanted the flexibility. It took a bit longer but I can now drive any car. For me, that was worth the extra time.”

Rebecca S.

Stratford, E15

“Everyone told me to learn manual but I knew I wanted an electric car. Why spend extra hours learning skills I would never use? Automatic made perfect sense.”

Omar A.

Canary Wharf, E14

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from manual to automatic mid-training?+
Yes, many learners do. Your road awareness, observations, and positioning knowledge all transfer directly. You just skip the clutch and gears.
Is there a cost difference?+
Our lessons are the same price per hour for both automatic and manual. But because automatic learners often need fewer hours to reach test standard, the total cost can actually be lower.
Will I definitely need fewer lessons in automatic?+
On average, yes. Most learners need 10 to 20 percent fewer hours in automatic compared to manual. But individual experience varies depending on your natural ability and how often you practise.
Are all electric cars automatic?+
Yes. All electric vehicles use automatic transmission. With the UK banning new petrol and diesel car sales from 2035, the future is automatic.
What exactly are the licence restrictions?+
If you pass in an automatic, your licence only covers automatic cars. If you pass in manual, you can drive both. But with 54% of new cars being automatic, many drivers never feel restricted.
Which is better for nervous learners?+
Automatic, generally. Removing clutch control means one less thing to worry about, letting you focus entirely on observations, road positioning, and building confidence.
