You have done the lessons, booked the slot and practised the manoeuvres. Then someone turns up to their test without the right documents and it is cancelled on the spot, fee gone. It happens every week at test centres across the country. This checklist makes sure it never happens to you.
A quick note: a few links below go to Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, DriveThruL earns from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. We only mention things we would actually suggest to our own pupils.
🛑 The one thing you cannot forget
Your provisional driving licence (the photocard)
No licence, no test. The examiner has to check your identity before you drive, and the photocard is how they do it. If you cannot produce it, the test is cancelled and your fee is not refunded. Put it in your pocket the night before.
If your licence is lost or damaged, you can order a replacement at gov.uk, but it can take up to a week to arrive, so do not leave it to the last minute. Still waiting on your first licence? Our complete guide to the provisional licence walks you through it.
✅ What you actually need: the short list
📋 Practical test checklist
❌ What you do NOT need to bring
A lot of learners stress about paperwork they do not actually need. To be clear:
- Your theory test pass certificate. The examiner checks your theory pass digitally. You do not need the email or any printout. Just make sure it has not expired (theory passes last two years).
- The paper counterpart of your licence. This was abolished back in 2015. The photocard is all that exists now.
- Your booking confirmation. Helpful to have on your phone, but the examiner finds you by name and licence.
- Cash for the examiner. You paid the test fee when you booked. There is nothing more to pay on the day.
👓 The eyesight rule (do not get caught out)
Before you even get in the car, the examiner asks you to read a number plate from 20 metres away. Fail this and the test is over immediately, recorded as a serious fault. If you wear glasses or contacts for driving, wear them, and keep wearing them for the whole test. On a bright day, a pair of polarised driving sunglasses can stop low sun ruining that first read.
🚗 If you are taking your own car
Most pupils take their test in their instructor's car, which is already set up correctly. If you use your own vehicle, it must:
- Be taxed, have a valid MOT and be insured for the test (check your policy covers a test).
- Display L plates on the front and back. Cheap reusable magnetic L plates are fine.
- Have a working extra interior mirror fitted for the examiner. A clip-on blind-spot mirror set does not replace this, but the examiner does need their own view.
- Have no warning lights showing and be generally roadworthy (tyres, seatbelts, no dashboard fault lights).
Not sure what else is worth buying as a learner? Our learner driver essentials kit guide covers it honestly, including what not to waste money on.
⏱ Test-day timing and nice-to-haves
None of these are required, but they take the edge off the day:
- Arrive about 10 minutes early. Not 30 (you will just stew), not late (you may forfeit the slot).
- Water and a light snack. Nerves burn energy. Avoid a big meal right before.
- A short warm-up drive. Most instructors include a 30 to 60 minute lesson before the test so you arrive switched on.
🧑🏫 Can I take someone with me?
Yes. You can take your instructor or another adult on the test as an observer. Your instructor can sit in the back, and crucially they can stay to hear the examiner's feedback at the end, which is gold whether you pass or not. Read our guide to passing first time for what the examiner is really looking for.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I forget my provisional licence?
The test is cancelled, marked as your fault, and you lose the test fee. You then have to rebook and pay again. There is no exception, so treat the licence as the first thing you check.
Do I need to bring my theory test certificate?
No. The examiner verifies your theory pass on their system. Just make sure your theory pass is still within its two-year validity, because if it has expired you cannot take the practical at all.
Can I wear trainers for my driving test?
Yes, flat trainers are ideal. Avoid heavy boots, high heels, wedges or sandals, as anything that stops you feeling the pedals properly can cost you control.
Do I need L plates if I take the test in my instructor's car?
No, the instructor's car already has everything fitted, including L plates and the extra mirror. You only need to think about this if you supply your own vehicle.
