Choosing the right driving test centre can make a real difference to your chances of passing. In East London, we have several test centres to choose from, but not all of them will be practical depending on where you live.
The Tunnel Problem
Some test centres require crossing the Thames, which means tunnel charges and unfamiliar routes. Read on to avoid this costly mistake.
💰 Why Tunnel Crossings Matter
If you live in Tower Hamlets, Newham, or Hackney and book a test at Belvedere (which is south of the river), you'll need to use a tunnel or crossing to get there. This creates two problems:
- Extra cost: The Dartford Crossing charges vehicles, and while the Blackwall and Rotherhithe tunnels are free, they add significant journey time and stress
- Unfamiliar roads: You won't have practised the routes around a test centre that's across the river, which puts you at a real disadvantage on test day
📍 Test Centres North of the Thames
For most East London learners, these test centres are accessible without any tunnel charges:
Goodmayes (IG3)
Pass rate: ~43% | Wait time: 6-8 weeks
Located on the High Road, this centre serves Ilford, Barking, Dagenham, Manor Park, and East Ham. Routes include the A12/A13 junctions and plenty of residential streets for manoeuvres.
Best for postcodes: IG1, IG2, IG3, IG11, E6, E12, E13, E14, E15, E16
Wanstead (E11)
Pass rate: ~44% | Wait time: 5-7 weeks
A quieter centre on Cambridge Park near Wanstead Flats. Popular with learners from Wanstead, Leytonstone, Leyton, and Forest Gate. Expect routes through Wanstead High Street and possibly the North Circular.
Best for postcodes: E4, E5, E7, E8, E9, E10, E11, E17, E18
Tottenham (N17)
Pass rate: ~46% | Wait time: 7-9 weeks
Based at the Selby Centre, this serves Tottenham, Hackney, and surrounding areas. Routes are urban with bus lanes and complex junctions. Since Wood Green test centre closed, this is now the main option for Hackney residents.
Best for postcodes: N17, N15, N8, N4, E5, E8, E9 (Hackney area)
Chingford (E4)
Pass rate: ~42% | Wait time: 6-8 weeks
On Hall Lane near Epping Forest. Routes can include narrow forest roads as well as the North Circular. Good for Chingford, Walthamstow, and Highams Park residents.
Best for postcodes: E4, E17, N9, EN1, EN3
Hornchurch (RM12)
Pass rate: ~45% | Wait time: 5-6 weeks
On Station Lane, serving Romford, Upminster, and Hornchurch. Higher pass rate with suburban roads and good variety. Accessible via A12/A127.
Best for postcodes: RM1, RM2, RM3, RM11, RM12, RM13, RM14
Tilbury (RM18)
Pass rate: ~51% 🏆 | Wait time: 4-6 weeks
Further out in Essex but accessible via the A13 without any tunnels. This centre has one of the highest pass rates in the area. If you live in Barking, Dagenham, or Grays, it's definitely worth considering despite the longer journey.
Best for postcodes: RM17, RM18, RM19, RM20, SS17 (also accessible from Barking/Dagenham via A13)
❌ What About Belvedere?
Belvedere test centre (DA17) has a good pass rate around 50%, but it's south of the Thames in Bexley. Unless you live in Southeast London (Abbey Wood, Thamesmead, Erith), getting there from East London means using a tunnel or the Dartford Crossing.
Our advice: Only book Belvedere if you live south of the river or you're willing to pay for extra lessons specifically to learn the routes in that area.
🚫 Closed Test Centres
Be aware that Wood Green test centre has permanently closed. If you see older information online mentioning Wood Green, it's no longer accurate. Learners who would have used Wood Green should now consider Tottenham or Chingford.
✅ How to Choose the Right Centre
Choose a test centre where:
- 1. You can practice the routes: Take at least 5-10 lessons in the area around your test centre
- 2. Your instructor knows the area: Local instructors will know common test routes and tricky spots
- 3. You won't face extra costs: Avoid centres that require tunnel crossings unless you live nearby
- 4. The journey isn't stressful: A 45-minute drive to Tilbury might be worth it for the higher pass rate, but not if you'll arrive stressed
