Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor involves passing three DVSA exams. Here is what each part involves.
A multiple-choice theory test and hazard perception test. Covers road safety, traffic signs, and driving theory. You must pass this before moving to Part 2.
A practical driving test that assesses your driving to an advanced level. You will need to demonstrate exceptional car control, road awareness, and hazard management.
The final assessment tests your ability to instruct. You will deliver a lesson to an examiner acting as a student. This tests your communication, planning, and teaching skills.
Most people complete all three parts in 12 to 16 weeks with dedicated study and practice. Some candidates take longer depending on their schedule and prior experience.
Once you pass Part 2, you can apply for a trainee licence and start teaching students while preparing for Part 3. This means you can begin earning before you are fully qualified. DriveThruL welcomes PDIs with a valid trainee licence.
