For Instructors
Five principles that define how every DriveThruL lesson is taught.
The skills are the same. The test is the same. But how you teach those skills is what separates a good instructor from a great one. The DRIVE Method gives you a structured, repeatable approach that students can see, track, and trust.
Five principles that guide every lesson. Easy to remember, powerful in practice.
The instructor demonstrates the skill first, then asks the student to reflect on what they observed. This client-centred approach builds understanding rather than relying on rote instruction.
You understand the "why" behind every skill, not just the "how". This makes your driving instinctive rather than mechanical.
Instead of remembering hundreds of individual actions, students learn named routines (MSPSL, POM, LADA, etc.) that apply to whole categories of driving situations. Routines become automatic with practice.
You build a toolkit of reliable routines that work in any situation, so you always know what to do.
Every skill is tracked through five levels: Introduced, Helped, Prompted, Independent, and Reflection. Students progress at their own pace and never move on until they are genuinely ready.
You can see exactly where you are on every skill, and you always know what to work on next.
The instructor asks "what can you see?" and "what are your options?" before giving directions or using dual controls. This builds the student's own decision-making ability from the start.
You learn to think for yourself behind the wheel, building real confidence that lasts beyond the test.
The last 5-10 minutes of every lesson are a structured reflection. The student self-assesses first, the instructor confirms, and together they agree on the focus for next time.
You finish every lesson knowing exactly what you did well and what to focus on next. No guessing.
Named routines for every driving situation. Students learn patterns, not just actions.
