MASTERING YOUR VEHICLE

Understanding Car ControlsYour Hands-On Guide

Knowing where everything is and how to use it is fundamental to safe and confident driving. Get to grips with your car's primary and secondary controls.

Primary Controls: The Essentials

Pedals (Accelerator, Brake, Clutch)

These are arguably the most crucial controls for making the car move, stop, and change gears.

  • Accelerator (Gas): Rightmost pedal. Increases engine speed, thus increasing road speed. Use smoothly and progressively.
  • Brake: Middle pedal. Slows or stops the car. Use gently at first, then more firmly as needed.
  • Clutch (Manual Cars Only): Leftmost pedal. Disengages the engine from the wheels. Used for changing gears and bringing the car to a stop without stalling.

Quick Tip: Always ensure your heel is on the floor and your foot pivots between the brake and accelerator. This prevents accidental pressing of the wrong pedal.

Steering Wheel

Your primary control for direction. Proper grip and smooth movements are essential.

  • Hold the wheel firmly but gently, typically at '10 to 2' or 'quarter to three'.
  • Use 'push-pull' steering for most turns, maintaining control and preventing arm crossing.
  • Always look where you want to go; your hands will naturally follow your eyes.

Gear Stick (Manual) & Handbrake

  • Gear Stick: In manual cars, used to select the appropriate gear for speed and power. Learn the gear pattern.
  • Handbrake (Parking Brake): Used to secure the car when stationary or for hill starts. Ensure it's fully on when parked and fully off when driving.

Secondary Controls: Comfort, Communication & Safety

Steering Wheel Stalks

These are typically located on either side of your steering wheel.

  • Indicators: Usually left stalk. Push up for right, down for left. Essential for communicating your intentions.
  • Headlights: Often on the left stalk. Controls dipped beam, main beam, and sometimes sidelights. Learn how to switch between dipped and main beam.
  • Wipers: Usually right stalk. Controls front and sometimes rear wipers, with various speeds and intermittent settings.

Dashboard & Instrument Panel

Provides vital information about your car's performance and status.

  • Speedometer: Displays your current speed (MPH/KMH).
  • Fuel Gauge: Shows fuel level.
  • Warning Lights: Alerts to problems (engine, oil, battery, brakes).
  • Rev Counter (Tachometer): Shows engine RPM (in some cars).
  • Temperature Gauge: Indicates engine temperature.

Other Secondary Controls

Hazard Lights

Activates all indicators to warn of temporary obstruction or emergency.

Horn

Used to alert other road users of your presence, not to express frustration.

Heating & Air Conditioning

Maintain comfort and keep windows clear (demisting).

Key Takeaways

Familiarise Yourself

Before every drive, take a moment to locate and understand all the controls in your specific vehicle.

Smooth & Progressive

Practice using all controls smoothly and progressively to maintain comfort and control for passengers and other road users.
