YOUR FIRST MOVEMENTS

Moving Off & StoppingThe Foundation of Driving

These are the very first skills you'll master. Learn how to get your car moving smoothly and bring it to a safe, controlled stop in any situation.

Moving Off: Getting Started Smoothly

P Prepare: The First Steps

Before you even think about moving, get your car ready.

  • Engage the handbrake.
  • Select 1st gear (or 'Drive' for automatic).
  • Press the clutch down fully (manual).
  • Gently apply a little gas (around 1000-1500 RPM for manual, or just lift off brake for automatic).
  • For manual: Slowly lift the clutch to the biting point - where you feel the car wanting to move. Hold it steady!

O Observe: All Around You

This is the most critical step for safety. Always perform a thorough 'six-point' check.

  • Interior mirror, right door mirror, right blind spot (over shoulder).
  • Road ahead.
  • Left door mirror, left blind spot (over shoulder).
  • Ensure no pedestrians, cyclists, or vehicles are approaching or in your path.
  • If safe, signal right to indicate your intention to move off.

MManoeuvre: Smooth & Controlled

Only when it is safe to do so, release the handbrake and move off.

  • Release the handbrake.
  • For manual: Gently raise the clutch further while simultaneously adding a little more gas.
  • For automatic: Release the footbrake and gently press the accelerator.
  • Steer smoothly away from the kerb, looking well ahead.

Moving Off in Different Situations

Level Ground

Standard POM routine. Less gas and clutch work required.

Uphill

Requires more gas and a higher biting point to prevent rolling back. Keep feet steady.

Downhill

Less gas needed. Use footbrake for control, gravity will assist initial movement.

Stopping: Bringing Your Car to a Controlled Halt

M Mirrors: Check Behind You

Before you even touch the brake, check your mirrors to see what's behind you.

  • Interior mirror, then left/right door mirrors.
  • Identify any vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians that might be affected by your stop.
  • This informs how you will brake and position your car.

SSignal & Position

Communicate your intentions and position your vehicle safely.

  • Signal left (or right if necessary) if it will benefit other road users.
  • Position your car about 10-15cm from the kerb, safely and legally.
  • Avoid blocking driveways or junctions.

SSpeed Control & Look

Control your speed and maintain observations as you stop.

  • Brake gently and progressively.
  • At around 10 mph (or just before stopping), depress the clutch fully (manual) or ease off the brake (automatic) to prevent stalling.
  • Continue observing your surroundings, especially for hazards in front.
  • Once stopped, apply the handbrake and select neutral gear (manual) or 'Park' (automatic).

Key Takeaways

Observations are King

Always check your surroundings thoroughly before moving off and before braking to prevent collisions.

Smooth & Controlled

Aim for smooth, gentle movements with pedals and steering to ensure comfort and safety for all.

Adapt to Conditions

Adjust your technique for moving off and stopping based on the gradient and road conditions.

Practice Makes Perfect

These fundamental skills require consistent practice to become second nature.
