COMMANDING YOUR POSITION ON THE ROAD

Advanced Road PositioningMastering Lane Discipline

Beyond basic positioning, mastering lane discipline on multi-lane roads and complex junctions is key to smooth, safe, and efficient driving.

Why Advanced Positioning Matters

Good lane discipline is essential for reducing congestion, preventing accidents, and making your intentions clear to other road users. It's about more than just staying between the lines; it's about making strategic choices about where your vehicle should be at all times.

Efficient Flow

Contributes to smoother traffic flow on busy roads and motorways.

Enhanced Safety

Reduces risk of collisions by providing adequate space and predictability.

Clear Communication

Your lane choice communicates your intentions to other drivers.

Multi-Lane Roads: Dual Carriageways & Motorways

Keep Left (Unless Overtaking)

The fundamental rule on multi-lane roads: always drive in the left-hand lane unless you are overtaking or directed otherwise by signs.

  • The left lane is your primary driving lane.
  • Use middle and right lanes for overtaking only.
  • Return to the left-hand lane as soon as it's safe after overtaking.
  • This prevents 'lane hogging' and improves traffic flow.

Safe Lane Changes

Every lane change must be executed with precision and care, following the MSM routine.

  • Mirrors: Check interior and exterior mirrors.
  • Signal: Signal your intentions clearly and in good time.
  • Blind Spot: Always do a quick head check over your shoulder.
  • Manoeuvre: Only change lanes when it's safe, and move smoothly and progressively.
  • Ensure your manoeuvre won't force another driver to slow down or change direction.

Junctions & Roundabouts: Choosing the Right Lane

Correct lane choice at these complex intersections is critical for safety and avoiding unnecessary manoeuvres.

Junctions

  • Turning Left: Position yourself in the leftmost lane (if multiple lanes).
  • Turning Right: Position yourself in the rightmost lane for right turns (if multiple lanes).
  • Going Straight: Follow road markings or position in the appropriate lane, usually not the far left or right.
  • Plan early: Identify your exit and get into the correct lane well before the junction.

Roundabouts

  • First Exit (Left): Approach in the left-hand lane, signal left.
  • Straight Ahead: Approach in the left-hand lane (or middle if three+ lanes), no initial signal, signal left on approach to your exit.
  • Last Exit (Right/Past 12 o'clock): Approach in the right-hand lane, signal right, then signal left after passing the exit before yours.
  • Always give way to traffic already on the roundabout from your right (unless road markings/signs state otherwise).

Box Junctions

Box junctions, marked with yellow criss-cross lines, are designed to prevent gridlock.

  • Rule: You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear.
  • Exception (Turning Right): You MAY enter the box and wait if you are turning right and are only prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic or other vehicles also waiting to turn right.
  • Always ensure your exit is clear beyond the junction before entering.

Warning: Stopping in a box junction when your exit isn't clear is a traffic offence and can result in a fine.

Key Takeaways

Plan Your Route

Know your route and your exit well in advance to select the correct lane in good time.

Observe, Signal, Manoeuvre

Always apply the MSM routine diligently for every lane change or change of direction.

Think Ahead

Anticipate other drivers' actions and position your vehicle to create safe space and options.

Avoid Last-Minute Changes

Sudden lane changes are dangerous and disruptive. Avoid them by planning early.
