YOUR CAR'S HEALTH & YOUR SAFETY

Essential Vehicle Safety ChecksKnow Your Car Inside Out

Regular safety checks are vital for your safety, your passengers', and other road users. Learn what to look for and why it matters.

Why Regular Checks Are Non-Negotiable

As a driver, you are legally responsible for the roadworthiness of your vehicle. Neglecting basic safety checks can lead to serious accidents, costly fines, penalty points, or even a driving ban. Being proactive ensures your car is safe, reliable, and legal.

Prevent Accidents

Identify potential mechanical issues before they become dangerous.

Avoid Fines & Points

Ensure your car meets legal standards, avoiding penalties up to £2,500 and 3 points.

Roadworthiness

Maintain your vehicle in a safe, legal, and reliable condition for every journey.

Tyres: Your Car's Only Contact with the Road

Tyres are critical for grip, braking, steering, and overall control. Their condition is paramount.

Tread Depth

  • Legal minimum: 1.6mm across the central ¾ of the tyre.
  • Use the "20p test": if you can see the border, your tread might be too low.
  • Shallow tread significantly increases braking distance, especially in wet conditions.

Condition

  • Check for cuts, bulges, cracks, or embedded objects.
  • Damage can lead to punctures or dangerous blowouts.

Pressure

  • Check weekly when cold, using a reliable gauge.
  • Correct pressure ensures optimal handling, fuel efficiency, and tyre longevity.
  • Information typically found in your car manual or on a sticker inside the driver's door.

Lights: See and Be Seen

All lights must be fully functional for visibility and communicating your intentions to other road users.

Check All Lights

  • Headlights (dipped & main beam), sidelights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights, reversing lights, and number plate lights.
  • Ensure they are clean, free of cracks, and working correctly (no flickering, even brightness).
  • Regularly clean your light covers for maximum visibility.

Warning: Driving with a faulty light (e.g., a brake light out) can be dangerous and lead to a fine and points.

Fluids: The Lifeblood of Your Engine

Maintaining correct fluid levels prevents serious damage and ensures your car runs smoothly.

Key Fluids to Check:

  • Engine Oil: Lubricates, cools. Check with dipstick, levels between min/max.
  • Brake Fluid: Essential for braking. Low level indicates a problem.
  • Engine Coolant: Prevents overheating/freezing. Check reservoir levels when cold.
  • Windscreen Washer Fluid: Keeps your view clear. Top up regularly.

Tip: Refer to your car's manual for recommended fluid types and exact checking procedures.

Brakes: Your Primary Safety System

Your brakes must be in perfect working order at all times. They are your most important safety feature.

Check for:

  • Functionality: Brakes should feel firm, not spongy or slack.
  • Pulling: Car should not pull to one side when braking.
  • Unusual Noises: Grinding or squealing can indicate worn pads.
  • Warning Lights: Any brake-related warning lights on your dashboard need immediate attention.

Reminder: If you have any doubts about your brakes, get them checked by a qualified mechanic immediately.

Understanding Dashboard Warning Lights

Red: Stop Immediately!

Indicates a serious problem. Pull over safely and seek assistance.

Amber/Yellow: Check Soon

Suggests an issue that needs checking by a mechanic, but not usually urgent.

Green/Blue: System On

Indicates a system is active (e.g., headlights) or working normally.
