Insider Tips for Tottenham

1

The A1010 High Road has several timed bus lanes. Check the sign at the start of each one, a bus lane violation is an instant fail and the most common serious fault at Tottenham.

2

The Seven Sisters and Tottenham Hale gyratories need lane planning. Read the signs on the approach and hold your lane.

3

The A10 Great Cambridge Road is a busy dual carriageway. Match the traffic speed before merging and keep left unless overtaking.

4

One-way systems around the High Road catch out sign-following on the independent drive. Look for signs early and position before the junction.

5

The shopping parades have heavy footfall and frequent crossings. Cover the brake and look for pedestrians stepping out.

6

Residential streets off Lordship Lane are narrow with permit parking and through traffic. Small inputs and full observation on manoeuvres.

What Tottenham Test Routes Look Like

Tottenham test routes are some of the most demanding urban routes in north east London. Most routes leave the Selby Centre via Selby Road and the High Road A1010, work through the residential grid off Lordship Lane or White Hart Lane for a manoeuvre, and include heavy traffic, bus lanes and at least one complex gyratory at Seven Sisters or Tottenham Hale. Independent driving sections usually follow signs along the A10 Great Cambridge Road or back towards Tottenham Hale. DriveThruL instructors drive these routes in rush-hour conditions every week. We know which bus lanes catch learners out, which one-way systems trip up sign-following, and where the examiner is most likely to ask for the manoeuvre.

Common Tottenham Test Routes

The most frequently used route patterns at Tottenham Driving Test Centre, drawn from instructor experience and student debriefs.

1. The High Road Loop

Exits the Selby Centre via Selby Road onto the High Road A1010, works a residential manoeuvre off Lordship Lane, and returns via Philip Lane. The standard opening route and a bus lane minefield.

Key roads
  • Selby Road
  • High Road A1010
  • Lordship Lane
  • Philip Lane
Watch out for
  • Multiple timed bus lanes on the High Road
  • Bus stop boarders pulling out
  • Pedestrian crossings near the shops

2. The Seven Sisters Run

Heads south on the High Road to the Seven Sisters junction and gyratory, through the Tottenham one-way sections, returning via West Green Road. Tests lane discipline under heavy traffic.

Key roads
  • High Road A1010
  • Seven Sisters Road
  • West Green Road
  • Philip Lane
Watch out for
  • Lane discipline through the Seven Sisters gyratory
  • Reading the one-way system
  • Heavy bus and cycle traffic

3. The Great Cambridge Road Run

Joins the A10 Great Cambridge Road dual carriageway for a stretch at 40mph, exits and returns via Bull Lane and White Hart Lane. Used for confident learners and busier slots.

Key roads
  • A10 Great Cambridge Road
  • Bull Lane
  • White Hart Lane
  • High Road A1010
Watch out for
  • Joining and leaving a busy dual carriageway
  • Lane discipline at speed
  • Speed transition back into 30mph

4. The Lordship Lane Manoeuvre Route

Quieter residential streets off Lordship Lane and The Roundway near Broadwater Farm, used when the examiner wants a bay park or parallel park. Common for nervous or first-test candidates.

Key roads
  • Lordship Lane
  • The Roundway
  • Downhills Way
  • Higham Road
Watch out for
  • Parked-car pinch points
  • Reverse manoeuvre with through traffic waiting
  • Mini-roundabouts on Lordship Lane

5. The Tottenham Hale Independent

Used for the 20-minute independent driving section. Follows signs through the Tottenham Hale gyratory via Ferry Lane and Watermead Way, returning via Monument Way. Sign-reading under time pressure.

Key roads
  • Tottenham Hale gyratory
  • Ferry Lane
  • Watermead Way
  • Monument Way
Watch out for
  • Following signs through a multi-lane gyratory
  • Retail park traffic on Watermead Way
  • Lane changes under time pressure

Common Faults at Tottenham

The mistakes we see most often on Tottenham routes, with the fix.

High Road bus lanes
Driving in an active bus lane during operating hours
The A1010 High Road has several timed bus lanes. Check the sign at the start of each one. A bus lane violation is an instant fail and the single most common serious fault at Tottenham.
Seven Sisters gyratory
Wrong lane or a late lane change inside the gyratory
Plan your lane from the signs on the approach and hold it. Changing lanes inside the gyratory without a fresh observation is a frequent serious fault.
A10 Great Cambridge Road
Joining too slowly or poor lane discipline at speed
Match the traffic speed before you merge and keep left unless overtaking. Hesitation onto the A10 forces other traffic to react.
One-way systems
Sign-following errors and a panic lane change on the independent drive
Look for the signs early and position correctly before the junction. Getting the route wrong is not a fault, but the panic lane change usually is.
Lordship Lane manoeuvre
Kerbing the reverse or blocking through traffic
These streets are narrow with permit parking and through traffic. Small inputs, full observation, and do not rush because a car is waiting.
Pedestrian crossings near the shops
Failing to anticipate pedestrians and stopping late
The High Road shopping parades have heavy footfall and frequent crossings. Cover the brake, look for pedestrians stepping out, and stop smoothly in good time.
