YOUR PRE-DRIVE SAFETY ROUTINE

The Cockpit Drill (DSSSM)Master Your Setup

Every safe journey begins with the correct setup. The DSSSM routine ensures you're comfortable, in control, and ready to drive.

Why the Cockpit Drill is Essential

The Cockpit Drill, often remembered by the acronym DSSSM, is a fundamental routine taught to all learner drivers in the UK. Performing these checks ensures your safety, comfort, and optimal control of the vehicle before you even start the engine. It's a habit that will serve you throughout your driving life.

Enhanced Safety

Prevents accidents by ensuring vehicle is ready and driver is optimally positioned.

Better Control

Proper adjustments mean better access to controls and improved vehicle handling.

Good Habits

Forms the foundation for safe driving habits, crucial for your test and beyond.

The DSSSM Routine: Step-by-Step

D

Doors Securely Closed

Before anything else, ensure all vehicle doors are properly shut.

  • Listen for the 'thud' of a well-closed door.
  • Check the dashboard warning lights - if a door is ajar, a light will usually indicate it.
  • Ensures safety of occupants and prevents doors from opening unexpectedly while driving.
S

Seat Position Correct

Adjust your seat for optimal reach of controls and visibility.

  • You should be able to fully depress the clutch (manual car) or brake pedal with a slight bend in your knee.
  • Your back should be comfortably supported against the seat.
  • Adjust the head restraint so it's at least as high as your eyes/top of ears, and as close to your head as comfortable.
  • Proper seat position is vital for comfort, control, and airbag effectiveness.
S

Steering Wheel Adjustment

Adjust the steering wheel for comfortable grip, clear dashboard view, and proper arm bend.

  • You should be able to hold the wheel at "10 to 2" or "quarter to three" with a slight bend in your elbows.
  • Ensure the steering wheel does not obscure your view of the instrument panel.
  • Allows for quick and precise steering inputs without overreaching or hitting your knees.
S

Seatbelt Fastened Correctly

Secure your seatbelt and ensure it's not twisted, fitting snugly across your shoulder and lap.

  • Check that all passengers are also correctly belted.
  • The driver is legally responsible for ensuring children under 14 are correctly restrained.
  • Prevents ejection and significantly reduces injury in the event of a collision.
M

Mirrors Adjusted

Adjust your interior and exterior mirrors to give you the best possible view of the road behind and to your sides.

  • Interior mirror should frame the rear windscreen.
  • Exterior mirrors should show a small part of the side of your car and a wide view of the road.
  • Crucial for observing traffic, changing lanes, and performing manoeuvres safely.

Remember Your DSSSM!

Make it a Habit

Perform the DSSSM every single time you get into the driver's seat, even for short trips.

Check Warning Lights

After the drill, always check your dashboard for any warning lights before setting off.
