YOUR OBLIGATIONS AS A LEARNER

Legal ResponsibilitiesFor UK Learner Drivers

Before you hit the road, it's crucial to understand the legal requirements. This guide breaks down everything you need to know to drive safely and lawfully.

Provisional Driving Licence

Your provisional licence is your golden ticket to learning to drive. Make sure you have it before your first lesson.

  • Apply at 15 years and 9 months, drive at 17 (or 16 if on disability benefits).
  • Must have the physical card before driving.
  • Allows driving on all roads except motorways (unless with an ADI in a dual-controlled car).
  • Must meet minimum eyesight standards.
How to get your Provisional Licence

Car Insurance

It is a legal requirement to have valid car insurance whenever you are driving, including as a learner.

  • If driving your own car, you need learner driver insurance.
  • If driving someone else's car, you must be added to their policy or have your own learner policy covering that car.
  • Your instructor's car will be insured, but check if you use their car for a test.
  • Driving uninsured can lead to fines, points, or a ban.

LL-Plates & MOT

Essential visible indicators and vehicle roadworthiness are key for learner drivers.

L-Plates (or D-Plates)

  • Must be displayed clearly on the front and rear of the vehicle.
  • Must conform to legal size and design specifications.
  • Remove or cover them when a qualified driver is using the car.
  • Failure to display correctly can result in penalty points.

MOT Certificate

  • The car must have a valid MOT if it's over three years old.
  • Ensures the vehicle is roadworthy and safe.
  • Always check the car's MOT status before driving.

Supervision Rules

You cannot drive alone as a learner. You must always be supervised by a qualified driver.

Who can supervise you?

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must hold a full, valid driving licence (manual for manual car, auto for auto car).
  • Must have held their licence for a minimum of three years.
  • Must not be banned from driving.
  • Cannot use a mobile phone or be under the influence of drink/drugs while supervising.

Important: The supervisor has the same legal responsibilities as if they were driving.

Key Takeaways

Stay Legal

Always have your provisional licence, appropriate insurance, and ensure the car has a valid MOT and tax.

Be Seen & Safe

Display correct L-plates front and rear. Drive only with a qualified supervisor.

Serious Consequences

Driving illegally can lead to hefty fines, penalty points, or even disqualification.

No Motorways (Unless...)

Learners cannot drive on motorways unless with an ADI in a dual-controlled car.
