Basic car maintenance checks

Weekly checks: the FLOWER routine

  • Fuel. enough for your journey
  • Lights. all working correctly
  • Oil. check level monthly
  • Water. coolant and screenwash
  • Electrics. all switches working
  • Rubber. tyres in good condition

Checking oil

  1. Park on level ground
  2. Wait for engine to cool
  3. Remove dipstick and wipe clean
  4. Reinsert fully and remove again
  5. Oil level should be between min and max marks
  6. Top up if needed with the correct oil type

Checking tyre pressure

  1. Find the correct pressure (door frame or manual)
  2. Check when tyres are cold
  3. Use a reliable pressure gauge
  4. Adjust at petrol station air pump
  5. Don't forget the spare

Changing a wiper blade

  1. Lift wiper arm away from windscreen
  2. Press release tab on blade
  3. Slide old blade off
  4. Attach new blade until it clicks
  5. Lower arm gently

When to get professional help

  • Warning lights on dashboard
  • Unusual noises or vibrations
  • Poor braking performance
  • Steering problems
  • Fluid leaks
