Dealing with aggressive drivers
Aggressive driving behaviour is unfortunately common. Understanding why it happens helps you respond appropriately.
Common triggers
- Traffic congestion stress
- Running late
- Perceived slights or mistakes
- Anonymity behind the wheel
How to respond
Don't engage
- Avoid eye contact
- Don't make gestures
- Don't shout or respond to shouting
- Keep windows up and doors locked
De-escalate
- Let them pass. your safety isn't worth a confrontation
- Increase distance between you
- If followed, drive to a police station or busy public place
- Call police if you feel threatened
Managing your own frustration
- Leave extra time for journeys
- Accept that traffic delays happen
- Listen to calming music or podcasts
- Remember that others' mistakes are usually unintentional
- Focus on arriving safely, not on other drivers' behaviour
