Preparing for test day
The week before
- Confirm your test appointment on GOV.UK
- Have a lesson on each potential test route
- Practise all manoeuvres until confident
- Do a mock test with your instructor
- Get good sleep each night
The night before
- Check you have your provisional licence
- Check theory test certificate (if not linked)
- Lay out comfortable clothes and suitable shoes
- Set multiple alarms
- Avoid alcohol and late nights
- Prepare a light, balanced meal for test morning
Test morning
- Eat a light breakfast. avoid sugar rushes
- Arrive at test centre 10 minutes early
- Use the toilet before your test
- Have a short warm-up drive with your instructor
- Take slow, deep breaths to calm nerves
During the test
- Listen carefully to instructions
- Ask for clarification if needed. the examiner will repeat directions
- Drive as you were taught
- If you make a mistake, don't dwell on it. move on
- The examiner wants you to pass
After the test
If you pass
- Your provisional becomes your full licence temporarily
- Your full licence arrives in about 3 weeks
- Consider Pass Plus for motorway and all-weather training
If you don't pass
- Ask the examiner to explain the faults
- Don't be too hard on yourself
- Discuss with your instructor what to focus on
- Rebook when you feel ready
- Many good drivers didn't pass first time
