Step-by-step guides for every manoeuvre on the UK driving test. Master parallel parking, bay parking, pull up on the right, and the emergency stop with expert tips from our instructors.
Test fact: You'll be asked to perform one manoeuvre during your test, chosen at random by the examiner. The emergency stop is asked in roughly 1 in 3 tests as an additional exercise.
Click on any manoeuvre below for a detailed step-by-step guide, expert tips, common mistakes to avoid, and test day advice.
Reverse parking at the side of the road
Master the art of parking neatly alongside another vehicle, parallel to the kerb. One of the most commonly tested manoeuvres.
Forward or reverse into a marked bay
Learn to park accurately within a marked bay. both forward and reverse. Essential for car parks and your driving test.
Reverse 2 car lengths on the right side
Pull up on the opposite side of the road, reverse for about two car lengths, then safely rejoin traffic. A newer test manoeuvre.
Stop quickly and safely under control
Demonstrate you can bring the car to a halt quickly and safely in an emergency situation. Only asked in 1 in 3 tests.
Every manoeuvre is assessed on the same three criteria. Nail these and you'll pass.
Smooth steering, proper clutch control, and appropriate speed management throughout the manoeuvre.
Constant all-round checks. mirrors, blind spots, and awareness of other road users throughout.
Completing the manoeuvre neatly, within safe limits, and reasonably close to the kerb or bay lines.
Not checking mirrors and blind spots before starting
Going too fast. slow speed gives you more control
Over-steering and ending up at the wrong angle
Forgetting to check for pedestrians and cyclists
Panicking when it goes wrong instead of correcting calmly
Not using reference points to guide positioning
Our instructors will help you master every manoeuvre before your test day.
