The wait for a practical driving test is long, but earlier dates do appear all the time as other learners change their plans. This guide explains how to find a driving test cancellation slot the safe, official way, what changed under the 2026 rules, and the services you should steer well clear of.
The one rule that matters most
The only official, free, and secure way to find or move to an earlier test is the GOV.UK driving test booking service. Since 12 May 2026, only you can change your own test. No one can do it for you.
📅 What is a driving test cancellation slot?
A cancellation slot (DVSA calls it an "earlier test") is simply a test appointment that becomes available when another learner moves or cancels their booking, or when the DVSA releases extra capacity. There is no separate public list of cancellations. The freed slots appear in the normal booking service and they can go within minutes, so finding one is about checking at the right time, not about any special tool.
⚙️ The 2026 booking rules you need to know
Three changes rolled out in 2026 and all of them are now in force. Make sure your plan fits inside them before you start hunting:
Maximum of 2 changes
You can change a car test appointment up to 2 times in total. Before this it was up to 6, so the days of moving your test again and again are over. Use both changes carefully.
Only you can change your test
Only the learner can book, change, cancel, or swap their own car driving test. Instructors, family members, and third party services can no longer legally do it for you.
Nearest 3 centres only
You can move your test to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where your test is currently booked, or back to the centre you originally booked. You can no longer chase a slot at a centre on the other side of the country.
Good to know: changing the date, the time, or the centre all count towards your 2 changes, and changing more than one of those at once still counts as a single change. Updating your address, adding or removing your instructor's reference number, and any change DVSA makes itself (for example bad weather) do not use up a change.
📱 How to find an earlier slot yourself, step by step
This is the method DVSA recommends, and it is completely free:
- Have your details ready. You need your UK driving licence number and your driving test reference number (or your theory test pass certificate number).
- Sign in to the booking service. Go to the GOV.UK change your driving test page and open your existing booking. The service runs from 6am to 11:40pm.
- Choose "change the date". The system shows the available appointments at your chosen centre, including any slots freed by cancellations, up to 24 weeks ahead.
- Add your nearest centres. Within the 3-nearest rule, checking more than one centre widens your options.
- Grab it and confirm. If an earlier date works, select it and confirm. Remember it counts as one of your 2 changes.
Mind the 10 working day rule
If you change or cancel with less than 10 full working days notice, you have to pay for the test again. Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.

Freed slots can appear at any moment and often disappear within minutes, so this is a numbers game. You cannot watch the screen all day, but checking at the right windows stacks the odds in your favour:
From 6am
The service opens at 6am and overnight changes show up first. The single best window.
Around 12 to 1pm
A steady trickle as people rearrange on their lunch break.
From 6pm
People who deliberated all day finally cancel or move after work.
One more window: check just before the 10 working day deadline. Learners often cancel right before they would lose their fee, which frees slots, so look harder around busy periods.
🔄 A simple daily routine that works
You do not need an app and you do not need to stare at your phone. A short, consistent habit beats frantic random checking. Here is a routine students tell us works:
Check 2 to 3 times a day
Use the windows above, and set a phone alarm for each so you do not forget.
Keep your details to hand
Stay signed in or have your licence and reference numbers ready so you can move the moment a date appears.
Look 1 to 4 weeks ahead first
Slots closer than about 3 working days are rarely released, so the realistic sweet spot is a date one to four weeks out.
Decide your rules in advance
Know which dates, times, and centres you will accept before you log in, so you are not hesitating while someone else grabs the slot.
Keep at it
Most people who check little and often find an earlier date within a week or two. Persistence is the whole trick.
📍 Be flexible (within the nearest 3 centres rule)
The more you are willing to accept, the more chances you get. Under the new rules you can still move to one of the 3 nearest test centres to your current booking, and that flexibility is your biggest lever:
- Add the other nearby centres allowed under the 3-nearest rule. A 20 to 30 minute drive can save weeks or even months of waiting.
- Accept weekday and off peak times. Mid week and mid morning slots are less in demand than weekends, so they come up more often.
- Practise the routes around any centre you would accept. Familiar roads on the day matter far more than which centre it is. Book a few lessons in that area first.
- Ask your instructor early whether they can cover a test at an alternative centre, so you are ready to say yes when a slot appears.
Never cancel your current test first
Always hold on to the test you already have until you have actually secured an earlier one. Use the "change the date" option, which moves you straight onto the new slot. If you cancel first and then go looking, you could end up with no test at all and a longer wait than you started with.
🚫 Apps and scams to avoid
You will see apps and websites that promise to find cancellations for you. DVSA is clear that these are not allowed, and using one can backfire badly:
- Services that search for cancellations and notify you, even if you complete the booking yourself, break the booking system terms.
- Services that automatically book or move your test are also against the rules.
- If DVSA detects bot activity linked to your licence, it can cancel your booking or restrict your online booking access, leaving you to manage everything by phone.
- These apps can be removed from the App Store or Google Play without warning, leaving you with no service and no refund.
Never share your booking details
Do not give your driving licence number, theory test certificate number, address, or payment details to any third party or post them on social media. Sharing them could let someone change or cancel your booking without your knowledge.
✅ Only take an earlier test if you are ready
An earlier date is only worth taking if you can pass on it. Sitting the test before you are prepared wastes the fee and can knock your confidence. Your instructor is the best judge of when you are genuinely test ready, so use the waiting time to get there rather than rushing.
