Finding an earlier driving test date
If you've tried booking a practical driving test recently, you'll know that average waiting times can be 22 weeks or more. In popular areas like East London, waits of 4-6 months are common.
Why waiting times are long
The backlog started during COVID when test centres closed for months. The DVSA has been working to clear it, but demand remains higher than capacity. Popular test centres like Goodmayes, Wanstead, and Loughton are consistently booked months in advance.
How cancellations work
Every day, people cancel or reschedule their driving tests. Those slots become available on the DVSA booking system for anyone to claim. The difficulty is that these slots are taken within minutes. sometimes seconds. Manually checking the DVSA website multiple times a day is tedious and rarely successful.
Three ways to find earlier dates
1. Manual checking (free)
You can log into the DVSA booking system and check for earlier dates yourself:
- Go to gov.uk/change-driving-test
- Enter your booking reference and licence number
- Check available dates at your preferred test centres
- Rebook if you find an earlier slot
The downside: you need to check multiple times per day, across multiple test centres, and slots disappear fast.
2. Cancellation alert services
Several services monitor the DVSA system for cancellations and alert you by text or email. Prices vary from around £20 to over £100. Most only send you a notification. you still need to log in and rebook quickly before someone else takes the slot.
3. Automatic rebooking services
The most effective option is a service that monitors for cancellations and automatically rebooks you to the earlier date. No rushing to your phone, no missing slots while you're at work or asleep. Several third-party services offer this functionality.
Tips to maximise your chances
- Be flexible on test centres: Monitoring 3-4 centres gives you more chances than just one
- Set a wide date range: The wider your acceptable dates, the more likely you'll find something
- Register early: The sooner you start looking, the more cancellation windows you can catch
- Keep practising: Don't stop lessons while waiting. you want to be test-ready when the date comes
