How many lessons will I need?
This is one of the most common questions learner drivers ask, and the honest answer is: it varies. Here's what the data says, and the factors that affect your number.
The DVSA recommendation
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) recommends an average of 45 hours of professional driving lessons combined with 22 hours of private practice before taking your practical test. But averages can be misleading. your number could be quite different.
What affects how many lessons you need
Your starting point
Complete beginners who have never sat behind a wheel typically need 40-50 hours. If you've had some experience. driving abroad, on private land, or with a previous instructor. you might need 20-35 hours.
How often you practise
Students who take 2-3 lessons per week progress faster than those who have one lesson fortnightly. Consistency matters more than cramming. Muscle memory for clutch control, mirror checks, and road positioning develops with regular practice.
Private practice between lessons
If you can practise with a friend or family member between lessons (they must be over 21, have held a full licence for 3+ years, and the car must be insured for learner use), you can reduce your professional lesson hours significantly.
Your age
Research shows younger learners (17-25) tend to need fewer lessons on average, while mature learners may take slightly longer. However, mature learners often develop safer driving habits more quickly.
Lesson duration
Two-hour lessons are generally more effective than one-hour sessions. You spend less time warming up and more time building skills.
Realistic ranges
- With some experience: 20-30 hours
- Average beginners: 35-45 hours
- Nervous learners or complex situations: 45-60 hours
- Intensive course students: 20-40 hours over 1-2 weeks
Estimating your cost
At DriveThruL, the pay-as-you-go rate is £36/hour. With a 10-hour block booking at £340, you pay £34/hour. For a rough budget:
- 30 hours: approximately £1,020 (block rate)
- 40 hours: approximately £1,360 (block rate)
- 50 hours: approximately £1,680 (block rate)
These estimates are based on block bookings at the discounted rate.
Signs you're ready for your test
Your instructor is the best judge, but general indicators include:
- You can drive a full 40-minute route independently with minimal input
- Your instructor rarely needs to use dual controls
- You can handle unexpected situations calmly
- You consistently pass mock tests with few faults
- You feel confident, not just capable
Don't rush to take your test before you're ready. The practical test costs £62, and rebooking after a fail means more lessons plus another test fee. It's more cost-effective to take a few extra lessons than to fail and restart.
