How to parallel park
Parallel parking is one of the three possible manoeuvres you might be asked to perform during your practical driving test. Breaking it down into clear steps with reliable reference points makes it manageable.
Before you begin
- Check your mirrors and signal left
- Pull up alongside the target car, about a door's width away
- Align your left mirror with their left mirror
Step by step
Step 1: Position
Stop when your left door mirror is level with the rear of the car you're parking behind. Keep about half a metre between your car and theirs.
Step 2: Prepare
Select reverse gear, check all mirrors and blind spots. Observe continuously throughout the manoeuvre.
Step 3: Initial reverse
Reverse slowly until your rear is in line with the rear of the other car. This is your first reference point.
Step 4: Full lock
Steer one full turn to the left while continuing to reverse slowly. Watch your right mirror.
Step 5: Straighten
When you see the kerb appear in your left mirror, straighten the wheels while continuing to reverse.
Step 6: Final adjustment
When your car is parallel to the kerb, steer right if needed to straighten up. Stop when you're about 30cm from the kerb.
Common mistakes
- Steering while stationary (dry steering)
- Not checking mirrors frequently enough
- Mounting the kerb
- Ending up too far from the kerb
Practising
Find an empty car park or quiet street to practise. Start with larger spaces and gradually try tighter ones. Your instructor can provide personalised reference points based on your car and seating position.
