Road markings are the instructions painted directly on the road surface. They work alongside vertical signs to give you information, warnings, and orders. For the theory test, and for safe driving, you need to know what each marking means and the rules about crossing or entering them.

─ White Centre Lines
📍 Purpose: White lines along the centre of the road separate traffic flowing in opposite directions. The type of line tells you whether you can cross it.
Broken White Lines
MAY CROSS
You may cross to overtake if it is safe. The longer the dashes and shorter the gaps, the greater the hazard ahead.
Double White Lines (Continuous)
MUST NOT CROSS
You must not cross or straddle them. Only three exceptions: entering a property/side road, passing a stationary vehicle blocking your lane, or passing a road maintenance vehicle, pedal cycle, or horse travelling at 10 mph or less.
One Broken, One Solid
DEPENDS ON YOUR SIDE
If the broken line is nearest to you, you may cross to overtake (if safe). If the solid line is nearest to you, you must not cross.
═ Yellow Lines
📍 Purpose: Yellow lines along the edge of the road control waiting and parking. The number of lines indicates the severity of the restriction.
Double Yellow Lines
NO WAITING AT ANY TIME
You may stop briefly to pick up or set down passengers, or to load/unload if no loading restrictions apply. But you cannot park, even for a moment. "I'll only be a minute" is not acceptable.
Single Yellow Line
TIMED RESTRICTION
Waiting restrictions apply during the times shown on nearby yellow plates. Outside those hours, you may wait. Always check the plates, as the hours vary by location.
█ Box Junctions
The Box Junction Rule
Yellow criss-cross lines painted on the road at a junction. The rule is clear: do not enter the box unless your exit is clear.
One exception: You may wait inside the box if you want to turn right and are only prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic or vehicles waiting to turn right ahead of you.
⚠️ Penalty: Box junction violations are enforced by cameras in many cities, including London. Fine: £130 (reduced to £65 if paid within 14 days).
⤦ Zigzag Lines
🚶
Near Pedestrian Crossings
White zigzag lines appear on both sides of pedestrian crossings (zebra, pelican, puffin, toucan). Within the zigzag area:
These rules exist to keep the crossing visible. A parked car in the zigzag zone could hide a pedestrian from approaching drivers.
▒ Hatched Markings
Solid White Border
DO NOT ENTER
You must not enter the hatched area except in an emergency.
Broken White Border
MAY ENTER IF SAFE
You may enter if it is safe to do so. Used to separate traffic streams or protect turning traffic.
🚍 Bus Lane Markings
The words "BUS LANE" painted on the road surface indicate a lane reserved for buses and other authorised vehicles. Operating hours are shown on accompanying signs. During those hours, entering the lane in an unauthorised vehicle will result in a penalty charge notice.
🔄 Rumble Strips
Raised strips across the road surface that create noise and vibration when driven over. They alert you to an upcoming hazard, typically a junction, roundabout, or change in speed limit. Not a legal obligation, but ignoring the warning they provide is unwise.

📚 Road Markings in the Theory Test
📝 Common Theory Test Questions:
- "When may you cross a double white line?" (Only the 3 exceptions listed above)
- "When can you enter a box junction?" (Only when your exit is clear, or turning right)
- "What do zigzag lines near a crossing mean?" (No parking, no overtaking)
- "What does a single yellow line mean?" (Timed restrictions, check nearby plates)
These are rule-based questions with clear right and wrong answers. Learn the rules and you will get them right.
