Warning road signs are your early-alert system. They tell you about hazards ahead, giving you time to adjust your speed and driving. Every learner driver needs to recognise these signs instantly.
Quick Recognition Guide
All warning signs share the same shape: a triangle pointing upward with a red border and white background. See this shape? Something ahead needs your attention.
🔎 How to Recognise Warning Signs
Warning signs follow a consistent design that makes them instantly recognisable:
Triangle Shape
Points upward
Red Border
Signals caution
White Background
Black symbol inside
💡 Warning vs Regulatory
Warning signs are advisory, not mandatory. They tell you a hazard exists but do not give a legal instruction. However, failing to react to a warning sign could still result in an accident or a driving test failure.
🛣 Junction and Road Layout Warnings
🔄 Roundabout Ahead
Circular arrows inside a red-bordered triangle. This appears before every roundabout and is one of the most frequently tested signs. When you see it:
- ✓ Begin checking mirrors
- ✓ Reduce speed
- ✓ Prepare to give way to traffic from the right
✚ Crossroads
A cross symbol warns of a crossroads where roads of equal importance meet. Approach with caution as there may not be traffic lights or give way markings.
⤴ Bend Ahead and Double Bend
A curved arrow shows the direction of the bend. A double-curve symbol warns of S-bends. Reduce speed before the curve, not during it. On country roads, bends are a leading cause of accidents.
⇋ Road Narrows
Narrowing lines indicate the road gets narrower ahead. Be prepared to give way to oncoming traffic or adjust your position.
⚠ Hazard Warnings
🚗 Slippery Road
A skidding car symbol. Reduce speed and avoid harsh braking, acceleration, or steering. Common near bridges, shaded areas, or locations prone to ice.
▲ Steep Hill
Shows a gradient percentage (e.g. 10%). On steep downhill sections, use a lower gear to control speed rather than relying on brakes alone.
🚧 Uneven Road / Road Works
Warns of potholes, speed bumps, or construction. Expect lane closures, temporary traffic lights, lower speed limits, and loose surfaces.
⇄ Two-Way Traffic
Opposing arrows warn you are entering a section with traffic from the opposite direction. Appears after one-way streets or dual carriageway merges.
🚶 Pedestrian and Animal Warnings
School Crossing
Shows children walking. Be extra alert near schools, especially during opening and closing times. Many school zones operate a 20 mph limit.
Traffic Lights Ahead
Warns that lights are ahead. Particularly important on fast roads where signals may be hidden by bends, hills, or trees.
Cattle and Other Animals
Various animal symbols warn of animals on or crossing the road. In rural areas, treat these seriously as animals are unpredictable.
Level Crossing
A gate or barrier symbol warns of a railway crossing. One of the most dangerous features on UK roads. Always be prepared to stop.
🌪 Weather and Environment Warnings
🌬 Side Winds
A windsock symbol warns of strong crosswinds, common on exposed bridges and coastal stretches. Be prepared for your vehicle to be pushed sideways.
🎉 Hump Bridge
Warns of a hump bridge with limited visibility. Slow down, keep to your side, and be prepared for oncoming traffic you cannot see.
